I’ve been freelance editing for over a decade now, and my business has evolved along with me!
Every editor’s journey is different. Here’s mine. I had just finished my master’s in philosophy and didn’t know what to do next. So I decided to go after an editing internship with a small traditional publisher, Breakwater Books, in St. John’s. After working with the managing editor, I was hired on as a publishing assistant for a year-long contract. That year gave me invaluable in-house experience in the publishing industry doing a bit of everything: copyediting, proofreading, reading and responding to ‘slush’ pile submissions, handling permissions, and more. After that, I decided freelancing was the way to go and founded E.S. Editing. The freedom to choose my clients and build a business around my interests and skill sets has allowed me to thrive as a small business since then (especially working out of my attic!). I started in academic editing, working on journal articles, theses/dissertations, and research transcripts, before shifting into book editing, mainly nonfiction books in the humanities and social sciences. And now I’ve added fiction editing into the mix! I love working with speculative fiction authors to get their manuscripts ready for readers. The most thrilling part of all is that I get to work with brilliant authors like you! I can’t wait to learn more about your project.✨ |
After working with her, I feel confident that the book is as strong as it can possibly be!
“Erika's got the golden touch! She took such good care of my romantasy debut. She's incredibly thorough, and it's clear that she scoured every line for errors and readability. In addition to the typical mistakes and grammatical errors (commas are my nemesis), she points out repeated words, awkward phrases, and continuity issues. She communicates with the utmost professionalism--and a healthy dose of much-needed encouragement mixed in. The style sheet she provides is an extra touch of magic. After working with her, I feel confident that the book is as strong as it can possibly be!” Amelia MacLeod

I absolutely made the right choice
“Erika took my manuscript from good to great! I got a sample edit from four editors for my copyedit and hers was by far the best. She was far better than any others at maintaining my voice while making my writing clearer and more polished. I absolutely made the right choice with her. Her attention to detail was outstanding and exceeded my expectations.” Zach Leezer

For once, my expectations of an editor were fully realized
“I think it is rare that a writer finds an editor who is perfectly in sync and able to handle the task of turning a rough diamond into a polished gem, yet this is how I felt after working for a month with Erika on my new manuscript. She picks up on those inconsistencies and errors which dog writers and can lead to that unprofessional feel in a new book. Her suggestions are to the point, diplomatically presented, and her feedback is thorough. For once, my expectations of an editor were fully realized.” Eric Colbourne

Her attention to detail is fantastic
“Erika's involvement in this project was a huge blessing! Her attention to detail is fantastic, and the style sheet she provided along with the revised manuscript provided consistency during the editing process. I appreciate the way she made necessary changes without altering the work's tone or style and how her written comments thoroughly explained the suggested changes. She communicated effectively and promptly and met all deadlines with ease. I can confidently recommend Erika to those seeking quality editing services!” Bahr Buhr

I can’t wait to work with her for my next novel!
“Working with Erika was so helpful in polishing my novel. I think the edits are marvelous and made the story much sharper and engaging, shoring up my weaknesses. It’s been so nice to see my thoughts translated into something quicker and more crisp. The editorial assessment was so helpful. So many light bulbs went off in my head. The feedback she offered taught me how I can improve my writing, and it’s inspired me to write better already.” Luke Atkinson
