Short Stories & Novella Editing

Give your short stories the best chance of getting published.
As the managing editor of a spec fic journal, I can help you polish and prep your stories so they're ready to submit to open calls.
Get Started
Are you an author looking to submit your short stories to open calls for submissions?
Do you want to have more publications to your name?
Maybe you want to get published in themed anthologies?

I'm here to help!

Literary journals and magazines get loads of awesome submissions, so you'll want your story to stand out. It doesn't take much for editors to relegate your story to the Rejection pile... I know because I've been the lead editor of a literary journal for four years and have read over 500 stories for four editions of the HOZ Journal of Speculative Literature. I know exactly what editors are feeling and how you can make sure your story gets noticed.

My goal is to help you refine and polish your stories so that they're ready for prime time. Let me take care of the details and double-check everything so that your story has the best chance to be published. You're too close to your story, especially if you've been revising it for a while. A professional second pair of eyes is exactly what you need.

For more tips on answering calls for submissions, check out my guest blog post!

That's exactly what my Short Fiction copyediting service is for. To help you feel confident that your story is the best version it can be. That way you'll have a better chance of getting it published!

“I had the pleasure of working with Erika when my short story was selected as part of their debut Journal of Speculative Literature. We developed a beautiful virtual writer-editor relationship and she was the last word in professionalism and elocution. She pointed out the smallest details that helped the manuscript flourish and attract attention.

My short story has definitely benefited from her magical touch, and to my downright delight has become one of the highlights of the publication all thanks to Erika’s intelligence and dedication.”

What's involved in copyediting?

This service is for authors who have extensively self-edited their story, maybe even received beta reader feedback. If you're happy with the structure and big picture of your story, then you're ready for copyediting.

Copyediting is a sentence-by-sentence deep-dive language edit. I'll be focusing on...

- spelling, punctuation, grammar
- word usage and other mechanics of style
- consistency in capitalization, hyphenation, abbreviations, numbers, and names

What you'll get

  • A fully edited Word document

I'll make my suggestions using track changes in Microsoft Word and leave comments in the margins.

  • A style sheet

This is an invaluable document that includes all the style decisions on capitalization, hyphenation, abbreviations, numbering (using the Chicago Manual of Style), along with details about the main characters, locations, and plot points to keep everything consistent across the whole book.

Meet your editor!

Hi, I'm Erika (she/her). I'm co-editor of the HOZ Journal of Speculative Literature and love working on speculative fiction. I would love to help you get more of your work out into the world!
I have a bachelor's degrees in humanities and a master's degree in philosophy, which somehow led me to pursue an editing internship after graduation. I got hired at a small traditional publisher, Breakwater Books in St. John's, and worked as a publishing assistant doing a bit of everything.

I learned all about the editing process from my managing editor. I read all the submissions from the 'slush pile', copyedited and proofread all sorts of books (fiction, nonfiction, and even poetry), and helped with various marketing tasks. After a year, I moved into the freelance world and started my own business, where I could take on whatever I dreamed up (as a multipotentialite, I love being led by my interests!).

In 2019, I helped start a small spec fic press with a few creatives and have co-edited four editions now of an anthology of short stories and poetry. I've read A LOT of submissions, and I know how hard it is to choose just a few to include in a publication. I'd love to help you get your story ready for submitting.
